The McGee-Spaulding-Hardy Historic Interest Group (MSHHIG) is an organization formed in 2000 by residents of Berkeley's McGee and Spaulding Tracts, and a small portion of the Hardy Tract, who are researching and documenting the history of the District bounded by Dwight Way,  Sacramento Street, University Avenue, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Way.

Our goal is to ensure that  the history of our District will not be as neglected in the future as it has been in the past. To this end, we have conducted two walking tours for the Berkeley Historical Society (BHS), and have collaborated with the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association (BAHA) on its coverage of the District in a new edition of its 41 Berkeley Walking Tours. (see Walks).

We also plan to classify every structure in the District by age and architectural style, and to compile histories of the more noteworthy ones. A preliminary "Built Environment Survey", made in 2002, has been followed by a more comprehensive survey, designed by MSHHIG in consultation with BAHA, which is still in progress (see Buildings: Surveys).

Other collaborative projects include the installation, as part of the Berkeley Historical Plaque Project, of a plaque on California Street at Dwight Way (see  History: Plaques).

Although we are not primarily a political organization, we do, from time to time, issue press releases, letters to newspapers, and other types of public statement that address issues relevant to the well-being and preservation of our District (see Soap Box). We invite comments on these statements, which are formulated after a good deal of discussion and compromise between our various points of view.

Our future plans include more print publications (see History: Publications,), and an ongoing feature briefly describing notable events, historical and contemporary, that took place in the McGee-Spaulding District (see Then and Now).

If you would like to contribute information, or take part in our activities, please see Your History and Contact Us. We meet bimonthly, and you are welcome to attend our meetings, dates of which are posted  under these heads.
